    The valley quickly became popular as a winter destination, and in February President Herbert Hoover signed the proclamation creating Death Valley National Monument, encompassing almost 3, square miles. Other facilities that started out as private getaways, were later opened to the public. Grapevine Canyon is on the western slope of the Grapevine Mountains in the northern part of Death Valley National Monument, California and Nevada. Grapevine Canyon Road covers the entire width of the canyon floor in places and is a frequently traveled route to Scotty 's Castle in the canyon. The region is arid and subject to flash flooding because of infrequent but intense convective storms.

Death Valley National Monument lies mostly within the state of California, although the Bullfrog Hills area in its northeast corner extends over into Nevada.
